Data Collection
The data utilized for this study were sourced predominantly from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC). The EPA data encompassed air quality measurements, including particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and sulfur dioxide (SO2), collected from various monitoring stations within Boise City and surrounding areas in Idaho. On the other hand, the NUFORC database provided comprehensive records of reported UFO sightings within the state of Idaho from 1980 to 2021. Interstellar odysseys and menacing meteor showers were excluded from our analysis, as they may have led to extraterrestrial misinterpretations of spacecraft sightings.

Data Analysis
To establish an initial correlation between air pollution and UFO sightings, we employed a statistical approach. The EPA's air quality data were matched temporally with the NUFORC's records of UFO sightings, allowing for a comprehensive examination of potential connections. Initially, we plotted the air quality indices against the frequency of UFO sightings to visualize any discernible patterns, akin to stargazing through a telescope with a somewhat cloudy lens.

Given the nature of the data, time series analysis was incorporated to identify seasonality, trends, and irregular fluctuations. An Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model was fittingly employed to account for the persistence of air pollution and the periodic fluctuations in UFO sightings, much like navigating the cosmic tides of data fluctuations. We dabbled in some astrometrics to ensure that our analysis did not veer off course into the black hole of spurious correlations.

Regression Analysis
Following the preliminary exploration, a robust regression analysis was conducted to measure the association between air pollution and UFO sightings. Multiple regression models were formulated, incorporating various air quality parameters as independent variables and the frequency of UFO sightings as the dependent variable. Ordinary least squares (OLS) regression was utilized to estimate the coefficients, enabling us to quantify the impact of air pollution on the celestial visitors, thereby venturing into the cosmic realm of statistical inference.

To account for potential confounding variables, such as population density and the hours of darkness, our models were diligently adjusted, ensuring that the relationships observed were not merely an artefact of terrestrial factors. Furthermore, a battery of diagnostic tests was employed to verify the assumptions of the regression models, akin to conducting astronomical observations to confirm the presence of quasars in statistical space.

Spatial Analysis
As the breadth of our investigation extended beyond Boise City, spatial analysis was conducted to explore the geographical distribution of UFO sightings in Idaho. Geospatial techniques, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), were employed to map the hotspots of extraterrestrial activity against the backdrop of air pollution hotspots, providing a visual depiction of the interconnectedness of earthly pollution and otherworldly encounters. Notably, the mapping process uncovered some spatial anomalies that could not be readily explained by mere chance, reflecting the quirks of both statistical models and celestial phenomena.

Limitations and Assumptions
It is essential to acknowledge the limitations of our study, particularly when navigating the quagmire of unconventional research areas. The assumed causal relationship between air pollution and UFO sightings, while statistically supported, does not imply causation, as extraterrestrial motivations are notoriously obtuse. Additionally, the quality and reliability of UFO sighting reports, akin to shooting stars in the sky, are inherently subjective, possibly subject to misinterpretation or misidentification.

Furthermore, the spatial and temporal resolution of air quality data may not completely capture localized variations, akin to meteor showers that astutely evade detection. Lastly, while our analysis encompassed a substantial temporal period, the potential influence of advancing technology and civilizational aspects on UFO sightings remains an intriguing avenue for future inquiry. This echoes the suggestion that we remain open to contemplating the extraterrestrial oddities that may yet spring forth from statistical data.

Ethical Considerations
In conducting this research, ethical considerations were paramount, particularly in presenting findings that straddle the intersections of science and the extraterrestrial. Ensuring the confidentiality of UFO witnesses, akin to safeguarding the secrecy of Area 51, was of utmost importance, as was our commitment to maintaining respect and dignity in the analysis of anecdotal accounts. The integrity of our investigation was upheld to be as pure as starlight, ensuring that our foray into the space of unique correlations remained grounded in ethical principles.

Upon the elucidation of our research methods, we believe that our choice of methodology befits the enigmatic nature of our subject matter, infusing precision with a touch of extraterrestrial whimsy.

Correlation r = 0.5783281 (Pearson correlation coefficient)
Correlation is a measure of how much the variables move together. If it is 0.99, when one goes up the other goes up. If it is 0.02, the connection is very weak or non-existent. If it is -0.99, then when one goes up the other goes down. If it is 1.00, you probably messed up your correlation function.

r2 = 0.3344634 (Coefficient of determination)
This means 33.4% of the change in the one variable (i.e., UFO sightings in Idaho) is predictable based on the change in the other (i.e., Air pollution in Boise City) over the 42 years from 1980 through 2021.

p < 0.01, which is statistically significant(Null hypothesis significance test)
The p-value is 6.04E-5. 0.0000603681391122892360000000
The p-value is a measure of how probable it is that we would randomly find a result this extreme. More specifically the p-value is a measure of how probable it is that we would randomly find a result this extreme if we had only tested one pair of variables one time.

But I am a p-villain. I absolutely did not test only one pair of variables one time. I correlated hundreds of millions of pairs of variables. I threw boatloads of data into an industrial-sized blender to find this correlation.

Who is going to stop me? p-value reporting doesn't require me to report how many calculations I had to go through in order to find a low p-value!
On average, you will find a correaltion as strong as 0.58 in 0.00604% of random cases. Said differently, if you correlated 16,565 random variables Which I absolutely did.
with the same 41 degrees of freedom, Degrees of freedom is a measure of how many free components we are testing. In this case it is 41 because we have two variables measured over a period of 42 years. It's just the number of years minus ( the number of variables minus one ), which in this case simplifies to the number of years minus one.
you would randomly expect to find a correlation as strong as this one.

[ 0.33, 0.75 ] 95% correlation confidence interval (using the Fisher z-transformation)
The confidence interval is an estimate the range of the value of the correlation coefficient, using the correlation itself as an input. The values are meant to be the low and high end of the correlation coefficient with 95% confidence.

This one is a bit more complciated than the other calculations, but I include it because many people have been pushing for confidence intervals instead of p-value calculations (for example: NEJM. However, if you are dredging data, you can reliably find yourself in the 5%. That's my goal!

All values for the years included above: If I were being very sneaky, I could trim years from the beginning or end of the datasets to increase the correlation on some pairs of variables. I don't do that because there are already plenty of correlations in my database without monkeying with the years.

Still, sometimes one of the variables has more years of data available than the other. This page only shows the overlapping years. To see all the years, click on "See what else correlates with..." link above.

Why this works

  1. Data dredging: I have 25,153 variables in my database. I compare all these variables against each other to find ones that randomly match up. That's 632,673,409 correlation calculations! This is called “data dredging.” Instead of starting with a hypothesis and testing it, I instead abused the data to see what correlations shake out. It’s a dangerous way to go about analysis, because any sufficiently large dataset will yield strong correlations completely at random.
  2. Lack of causal connection: There is probably Because these pages are automatically generated, it's possible that the two variables you are viewing are in fact causually related. I take steps to prevent the obvious ones from showing on the site (I don't let data about the weather in one city correlate with the weather in a neighboring city, for example), but sometimes they still pop up. If they are related, cool! You found a loophole.
no direct connection between these variables, despite what the AI says above. This is exacerbated by the fact that I used "Years" as the base variable. Lots of things happen in a year that are not related to each other! Most studies would use something like "one person" in stead of "one year" to be the "thing" studied.
  3. Observations not independent: For many variables, sequential years are not independent of each other. If a population of people is continuously doing something every day, there is no reason to think they would suddenly change how they are doing that thing on January 1. A simple Personally I don't find any p-value calculation to be 'simple,' but you know what I mean.
p-value calculation does not take this into account, so mathematically it appears less probable than it really is.
  4. Confounding variable: 2020 is particularly different from the other years on this graph. Confounding variables (like global pandemics) will cause two variables to look connected when in fact a "sneaky third" variable is influencing both of them behind the scenes.
