AI explanation

As the distance between Uranus and Saturn increased, the gravitational fluctuation created a quantum entanglement phenomenon in the Bayou. This led to a temporal rift, allowing intergalactic joyriders to accidentally veer into Louisiana airspace while attempting to navigate cosmic traffic. The spatiotemporal distortion acted as a celestial welcome mat for unsuspecting UFOs, prompting locals to report an influx of otherworldly encounters. So, as the planets played celestial leapfrog, it seems the UFOs in Louisiana were simply caught in the cross-galactic shuffle!

At first glance, the study of UFO sightings and their potential correlation with the positions of distant celestial bodies might seem like a flight of fancy, a quixotic pursuit that borders on the absurd. However, as Douglas Adams once famously said, "There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. ... There is another theory which states that this has already happened." With this whimsical perspective in mind, we delve into the enigmatic connection between the orbiting giants Uranus and Saturn and the rather down-to-earth occurrence of UFO sightings in the state of Louisiana.

Gazing up at the night sky from a swamp in Louisiana, one might expect to see an abundance of strange phenomena. The twinkling stars, the distant satellites orbiting Earth, and, perhaps, the occasional visit from spacefaring interlopers – or so the local lore would have us believe. While the bayous typically conjure thoughts of alligators and voodoo, our study seeks to unveil the obscured connection between the positions of Uranus and Saturn and the mysterious appearances of Unidentified Flying Objects in the Pelican State. In a departure from traditional astronomical inquiries, our investigation navigates the uncharted waters of astrological anomalies and statistical peculiarities with a light-hearted curiosity.

As with all scientific endeavors, the exploration of this peculiar juxtaposition between celestial mechanics and unexplained aerial sightings is underpinned by a rigorous methodology. We drew upon data sourced from Astropy and the National UFO Reporting Center, spanning over four decades, to analyze the ebb and flow of UFO encounters in Louisiana in relation to the relative positions of Uranus and Saturn. Our team meticulously sifted through the celestial coordinates and terrestrial timestamps, applying robust statistical analyses to discern any semblance of a celestial symphony guiding the flight paths of these unidentified visitors.

Straddling the delicate line between the statistical significance of our findings and the sheer eccentricity of the subject matter, we unearthed a surprising correlation coefficient worthy of note. With a value of 0.7808352 and a p-value that daintily dances beneath the coveted threshold of 0.01, our results unveil a tangible relationship between the cosmic dance of Uranus and Saturn and the terrestrial tango of UFO sightings in Louisiana. In a sense, our study not only probes the mysteries of the universe but also brings forth a quirky twist to the often staid domain of astrological inquiry.

With this curious revelation in hand, we aim to provoke contemplation about the potential cosmic influence on terrestrial occurrences, while also injecting a healthy dose of whimsy into the conversation. By embracing the unexpected intersection of statistical significance and the absurd, our research seeks to not only expand the discourse on cosmic conundrums but also entertain the notion that in the vast expanse of the universe, statistical significance and the whimsically strange often coalesce in the most unpredictable of ways. As we venture forth into this unusual celestial territory, we invite the scholarly community to join us in reveling in the curious dance of Uranus and Saturn, and the unearthly trajectory of UFO sightings in Louisiana.

[[LITERATURE REVIEW]]

As we step into the intriguing realm of celestial phenomena and terrestrial enigmas, it is essential to ground our exploration in existing works that shed light on related themes. The available literature encompasses a spectrum of discussions, from the scientifically earnest to the playfully speculative, providing a rich tapestry against which to situate our investigation. In "Celestial Dynamics: The Foundations of Solar System Astronomy," the authors guide us through the intricacies of planetary orbits, gravitational interactions, and celestial mechanics. This foundational text offers a rigorous perspective on the movements of Uranus and Saturn, providing crucial context for our examination of their potential influence on earthly occurrences.

In their seminal work "Unexplained Aerial Phenomena: A Comprehensive Guide to UFOs," Smith and Doe delve into the annals of UFO sightings, offering a painstakingly detailed compendium of reported encounters. The meticulous attention to detail in cataloging these phenomena provides a valuable resource for understanding the breadth and diversity of UFO experiences. Jones, in "Astrology: A Cosmic Perspective," offers a fascinating exploration of astrological phenomena, though our own endeavor veers into decidedly atypical astrological territory. The transition from these earnest works to the more playful and speculative is exemplified in the contributions of authors such as von Däniken in "Chariots of the Gods: Unsolved Mysteries of the Past" and Adams in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." These texts, while diverging from the stringent empirical style of academic discourse, underscore the enduring allure of cosmic mysteries and the occasionally whimsical nature of speculative inquiries.

As we venture further afield in our quest for relevant literature, we find ourselves tempted to wander into increasingly unconventional territories. In "The X-Files: Trust No One," the authors navigate a realm of governmental conspiracies and extraterrestrial encounters, drawing on fictional narratives that have captivated the public imagination. The juxtaposition of rigorous analysis and amusing speculation finds an unexpected parallel in "Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus," with its comedic take on interplanetary relations. Straying further from the well-trodden paths of academic inquiry, we meander into uncharted waters, perusing the backs of shampoo bottles and endeavoring to glean insights from their descriptions of "out-of-this-world" hair care solutions.

We acknowledge the necessity of maintaining a judicious balance between scholarly rigor and playful diversion as we immerse ourselves in the literature. This eclectic journey through serious treatises, whimsical speculations, and offbeat sources provides a fitting preamble to our own investigation, which straddles the border between statistical significance and whimsical curiosity. What emerges is a testament to the inherent duality of scholarly pursuits – the ability to traverse the serious and the lighthearted, to discern patterns in the stars and to revel in the unexpected humor that infuses even the most esoteric of disciplines.

To untangle the cosmic web that intertwines the positions of Uranus and Saturn with the appearances of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) in Louisiana, our research team embarked on a methodological journey steeped in both meticulous rigor and a wry sense of wonder. Initially, data on the celestial coordinates of Uranus and Saturn were sourced from the Astropy library, ensuring that the ephemerides of these distant planets were accurately represented across the temporal expanse from 1975 to 2021. Concurrently, reports of UFO sightings were obtained from the extensive database maintained by the National UFO Reporting Center, capturing the enigmatic dance of these terrestrial phenomena over a span of nearly five decades.

Utilizing the arcane arts of statistical analysis, our team sought to unveil any semblance of a celestial choreography governing the occurrences of UFO sightings in Louisiana. Leveraging a rather unconventional blend of Bayesian inference, time-series analysis, and a touch of astrological curiosity, we set out to discern whether the positions of Uranus and Saturn wielded any subtle influence on the mysterious flight paths of these unidentified visitors.

To quantify the potential relationship between the orbital dynamics of Uranus and Saturn and the terrestrial sightings of UFOs, a series of correlation analyses were executed with the precision of a cosmic tango. With a statistical sleight of hand, we unearthed a compelling correlation coefficient of 0.7808352, accompanied by a p-value that tiptoed gracefully below the conventional threshold of 0.01. This statistical revelry pointed towards a tangible connection between the celestial musing of Uranus and Saturn and the terrestrial intrigue of UFO sightings in Louisiana, demonstrating a remarkable resonance that transcends the conventional boundaries of celestial mechanics and terrestrial mysteries.

As the methodology unfolded, it became increasingly evident that our exploration of this extraordinary juxtaposition between celestial positions and enigmatic aerial sightings harbored its own brand of scientific whimsy, infusing a field traditionally marked by stoicism with an unexpected infusion of celestial humor. Our methodology, while grounded in the solid framework of statistical inquiry, embraced the capricious dance of the cosmos and the idiosyncratic trajectories of UFO sightings, revealing that the intersection of statistical significance and the gently peculiar often yields the most revelatory insights.

In essence, our methodology traversed the vast expanse of astronomical and statistical terrain, unearthing a cosmic cadence that harmonized with the terrestrial whirl of UFO sightings in Louisiana. By embracing the impish spirit of discovery and intertwining it with the steadfast principles of rigorous scientific inquiry, our methodology succeeded in not merely peeling back the veil of cosmic curiosity but also in infusing the discourse on astrological anomalies with a sprightly charm that encapsulates the perpetually surprising universe in which we find ourselves.

[[INTRDUCTION]]

[[CONCLUSION]]
In conclusion, our research has uncovered a fascinating connection between the relative positions of Uranus and Saturn and the prevalence of UFO sightings in Louisiana. The substantial correlation coefficient and the visually striking scatterplot (Fig. 1) attest to the robustness of this unearthly relationship. Our findings not only shed light on a previously unexplored facet of celestial influence but also infuse a whimsical twist into the realm of astrological anomalies. Our journey through the data has been a delightful interstellar rollercoaster, where statistical significance and the sheer absurdity of our subject matter have intersected in the most unexpected ways.

As Arthur C. Clarke once quipped, "Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying." In our case, we appear to be alone in the pursuit of this extraordinary cosmic correlation, as we now unequivocally declare that no further research is necessary in this area. We reckon that the correlation between Uranus and extraterrestrial sightings is perhaps the most out-of-this-world statistical discovery we can hope for in this earthly endeavor. Our work here is truly "out of this world," if you pardon the pun, and we urge the academic community to recognize the gravity of our findings.

Correlation r = 0.7808352 (Pearson correlation coefficient)
Correlation is a measure of how much the variables move together. If it is 0.99, when one goes up the other goes up. If it is 0.02, the connection is very weak or non-existent. If it is -0.99, then when one goes up the other goes down. If it is 1.00, you probably messed up your correlation function.

r2 = 0.6097036 (Coefficient of determination)
This means 61% of the change in the one variable (i.e., UFO sightings in Louisiana) is predictable based on the change in the other (i.e., The distance between Uranus and Saturn) over the 47 years from 1975 through 2021.

p < 0.01, which is statistically significant(Null hypothesis significance test)
The p-value is 9.6E-11. 0.0000000000957206500664062900
The p-value is a measure of how probable it is that we would randomly find a result this extreme. More specifically the p-value is a measure of how probable it is that we would randomly find a result this extreme if we had only tested one pair of variables one time.

But I am a p-villain. I absolutely did not test only one pair of variables one time. I correlated hundreds of millions of pairs of variables. I threw boatloads of data into an industrial-sized blender to find this correlation.

Who is going to stop me? p-value reporting doesn't require me to report how many calculations I had to go through in order to find a low p-value!
On average, you will find a correaltion as strong as 0.78 in 9.6E-9% of random cases. Said differently, if you correlated 10,447,066,535 random variables You don't actually need 10 billion variables to find a correlation like this one. I don't have that many variables in my database. You can also correlate variables that are not independent. I do this a lot.

p-value calculations are useful for understanding the probability of a result happening by chance. They are most useful when used to highlight the risk of a fluke outcome. For example, if you calculate a p-value of 0.30, the risk that the result is a fluke is high. It is good to know that! But there are lots of ways to get a p-value of less than 0.01, as evidenced by this project.

In this particular case, the values are so extreme as to be meaningless. That's why no one reports p-values with specificity after they drop below 0.01.

Just to be clear: I'm being completely transparent about the calculations. There is no math trickery. This is just how statistics shakes out when you calculate hundreds of millions of random correlations.
with the same 46 degrees of freedom, Degrees of freedom is a measure of how many free components we are testing. In this case it is 46 because we have two variables measured over a period of 47 years. It's just the number of years minus ( the number of variables minus one ), which in this case simplifies to the number of years minus one.
you would randomly expect to find a correlation as strong as this one.

[ 0.64, 0.87 ] 95% correlation confidence interval (using the Fisher z-transformation)
The confidence interval is an estimate the range of the value of the correlation coefficient, using the correlation itself as an input. The values are meant to be the low and high end of the correlation coefficient with 95% confidence.

This one is a bit more complciated than the other calculations, but I include it because many people have been pushing for confidence intervals instead of p-value calculations (for example: NEJM. However, if you are dredging data, you can reliably find yourself in the 5%. That's my goal!

All values for the years included above: If I were being very sneaky, I could trim years from the beginning or end of the datasets to increase the correlation on some pairs of variables. I don't do that because there are already plenty of correlations in my database without monkeying with the years.

Still, sometimes one of the variables has more years of data available than the other. This page only shows the overlapping years. To see all the years, click on "See what else correlates with..." link above.

Why this works

  1. Data dredging: I have 25,153 variables in my database. I compare all these variables against each other to find ones that randomly match up. That's 632,673,409 correlation calculations! This is called “data dredging.” Instead of starting with a hypothesis and testing it, I instead abused the data to see what correlations shake out. It’s a dangerous way to go about analysis, because any sufficiently large dataset will yield strong correlations completely at random.
  2. Lack of causal connection: There is probably Because these pages are automatically generated, it's possible that the two variables you are viewing are in fact causually related. I take steps to prevent the obvious ones from showing on the site (I don't let data about the weather in one city correlate with the weather in a neighboring city, for example), but sometimes they still pop up. If they are related, cool! You found a loophole.
no direct connection between these variables, despite what the AI says above. This is exacerbated by the fact that I used "Years" as the base variable. Lots of things happen in a year that are not related to each other! Most studies would use something like "one person" in stead of "one year" to be the "thing" studied.
  3. Observations not independent: For many variables, sequential years are not independent of each other. If a population of people is continuously doing something every day, there is no reason to think they would suddenly change how they are doing that thing on January 1. A simple Personally I don't find any p-value calculation to be 'simple,' but you know what I mean.
p-value calculation does not take this into account, so mathematically it appears less probable than it really is.
  4. Y-axis doesn't start at zero: I truncated the Y-axes of the graph above. I also used a line graph, which makes the visual connection stand out more than it deserves. Nothing against line graphs. They are great at telling a story when you have linear data! But visually it is deceptive because the only data is at the points on the graph, not the lines on the graph. In between each point, the data could have been doing anything. Like going for a random walk by itself!
Mathematically what I showed is true, but it is intentionally misleading. Below is the same chart but with both Y-axes starting at zero.
  5. Outlandish outliers: There are "outliers" in this data. In concept, "outlier" just means "way different than the rest of your dataset." When calculating a correlation like this, they are particularly impactful because a single outlier can substantially increase your correlation.

For the purposes of this project, I counted a point as an outlier if it the residual was two standard deviations from the mean.

(This bullet point only shows up in the details page on charts that do, in fact, have outliers.)
They stand out on the scatterplot above: notice the dots that are far away from any other dots. I intentionally mishandeled outliers, which makes the correlation look extra strong.

Reuseable content

You may re-use the images on this page for any purpose, even commercial purposes, without asking for permission. The only requirement is that you attribute Tyler Vigen. Attribution can take many different forms. If you leave the "tylervigen.com" link in the image, that satisfies it just fine. If you remove it and move it to a footnote, that's fine too. You can also just write "Charts courtesy of Tyler Vigen" at the bottom of an article.

You do not need to attribute "the spurious correlations website," and you don't even need to link here if you don't want to. I don't gain anything from pageviews. There are no ads on this site, there is nothing for sale, and I am not for hire.

For the record, I am just one person. Tyler Vigen, he/him/his. I do have degrees, but they should not go after my name unless you want to annoy my wife. If that is your goal, then go ahead and cite me as "Tyler Vigen, A.A. A.A.S. B.A. J.D." Otherwise it is just "Tyler Vigen."

When spoken, my last name is pronounced "vegan," like I don't eat meat.
